| Public Kindergartens | ||
In Kyoto City, there are
17 kindergartens (as of Oct. 2001). Children between the ages of 4
and 5 years can attend (some kindergartens also accept 3 year-olds).
As kindergartens are located throughout Kyoto City, the district of
residency determines which kindergarten children can attend.

| | The education system of Japan is comprised of 6 years of elementary school, 3 years of junior high school, 3 years of senior high school and 4 years of university (or 2 years of junior college). |
| | Elementary and junior high school are compulsory for all Japanese. |
| | Classes are held from Monday to Saturday. However, public schools have a holiday every 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month. |
| | Although school hours vary from school to school and grade to grade, Saturday lessons normally end around noon. |
| | In Japan, it is compulsory for all children between the ages of 6 and 15 to attend elementary and junior high school. |
| | School begins on April 1st and ends on March 31st the following year. Each year is divided into 3 terms. |
| | Textbooks are free of charge in elementary and junior high schools. |
| | School lunches are provided for all elementary school students. The cost is ¥3,600. |
| | In junior high school, students normally bring their own lunch. |
| * | In case of financial difficulty, it is possible to borrow money from the School Aid System (Shugaku-enjo) Do not hesitate to ask a teacher for information. |

| Enrollment procedures for Japanese schools | |
| 1) | When you register as a foreigner resident at the Ward or Branch Office of the area in which you live, mention that your child plans to study at a Japanese school, and get a Transfer Notice . (Tennyugaku tsuchisho) |
| 2) | At the same time where you will be told the name of a school and its address where your child can enroll. |
| 3) | Go to the school and hand in the transfer notice. You will be given an Enrollment Notification for Foreigners (Gaikokujin shugakutodoke) from the school. Fill it out and return it. |

| When your child can not speak Japanese |
| Children who cannot speak Japanese very well are able to receive Japanese language guidance at school. |
