Kindergarten

Prior to entering elementary school, children between the ages of 3 and 5 years enter kindergarten.

Public Kindergartens
In Kyoto City, there are 17 kindergartens (as of Oct. 2001). Children between the ages of 4 and 5 years can attend (some kindergartens also accept 3 year-olds). As kindergartens are located throughout Kyoto City, the district of residency determines which kindergarten children can attend.

Japanese Education System

The education system of Japan is comprised of 6 years of elementary school, 3 years of junior high school, 3 years of senior high school and 4 years of university (or 2 years of junior college).
Elementary and junior high school are compulsory for all Japanese.
Classes are held from Monday to Saturday. However, public schools have a holiday every 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month.
Although school hours vary from school to school and grade to grade, Saturday lessons normally end around noon.

Elementary and Junior High School Education

In Japan, it is compulsory for all children between the ages of 6 and 15 to attend elementary and junior high school.
School begins on April 1st and ends on March 31st the following year. Each year is divided into 3 terms.
Textbooks are free of charge in elementary and junior high schools.
School lunches are provided for all elementary school students. The cost is ¥3,600.
In junior high school, students normally bring their own lunch.
* In case of financial difficulty, it is possible to borrow money from the School Aid System (Shugaku-enjo) Do not hesitate to ask a teacher for information.

Foreign Children Attending Japanese Schools

While attendance at elementary and junior high school is compulsory for Japanese children, foreign children have no legal obligation to attend. However, foreign children can enroll by going through the necessary application procedures.

Enrollment procedures for Japanese schools
1) When you register as a foreigner resident at the Ward or Branch Office of the area in which you live, mention that your child plans to study at a Japanese school, and get a Transfer Notice . (Tennyugaku tsuchisho)
2) At the same time where you will be told the name of a school and its address where your child can enroll.
3) Go to the school and hand in the transfer notice. You will be given an Enrollment Notification for Foreigners (Gaikokujin shugakutodoke) from the school. Fill it out and return it.

When your child can not speak Japanese
Children who cannot speak Japanese very well are able to receive Japanese language guidance at school.

Senior High School Education

Senior high school education is not compulsory in Japan. There are national, public and private high schools, with the curriculum varying in some cases. For high school enrollment, students must have received the equivalent of a Japanese junior high school education.

International Schools

In Kyoto City, there are two international schools. The Kyoto International School is based upon the American school curriculum, offering an English language education, while the ECOLE FRANCIASE DU KANSAI (Kansai France Gakuin) provides education for French speakers.
