Number of Foreign Residents
There are approximately 43,000 registered foreign residents in Kyoto City, accounting for about 3% of the population. Of those about 80% are permanent residents from North and South Korea, while there are also many overseas students from Asia (mainly China) Europe and America.

Topography
Kyoto City lies in a valley surrounded by mountains in the east, north and west. There are two main rivers that run through the city, the Kamo in the east, and the Katsura in the west.

Climate
Due to its location in an inland valley, summers in Kyoto can be stiflingly hot and humid (Aug. high av. 37.8 ûC) and conversely, winters bitterly cold (Feb. low av. 0.3 ûC). In general, there is a sharp contrast in seasonal weather conditions and day and night temperatures.
